The world of Hungarian monument protection and culture is filled with pride: the comprehensive restoration of the Hungarian State Opera House has won the prestigious 2026 European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra award. The recognition is a triumph of historical loyalty and Hungarian expertise, in which the Rovitex team also played a prominent role.
World-class heritage protection in Hungarian hands
The award, presented by the European Commission and Europa Nostra, is the continent’s most important heritage award. The Budapest Opera House triumphed in the “Monument Conservation and Adaptive Reuse” category. The jury praised the renovation for preserving the 1884 splendor of the Ybl Palace while technologically taking the building into the future.
Rovitex: The meeting of textile art and precision
The success of a project of this size depends on the coordinated work of the participating specialist companies. We are particularly proud that Rovitex was one of the key players in the renovation. The company's specialists contributed to the interior textile and upholstery work, ensuring that the auditorium and the boxes are not only aesthetically impressive, but also meet the highest international standards in terms of acoustics and comfort.

The international jury was convinced by several aspects:
- Artistic restoration: In addition to the frescoes and gilded surfaces, the precise restoration of the tapestries and textile coverings completed the overall picture.
- Acoustic perfection: Thanks to the joint work of Rovitex and the other contractors, the sound in the auditorium has become clearer than ever.
- Modernized technology: Behind the digitalized stage technology, a dignified, classically splendid auditorium welcomes visitors.
Off to Cyprus and the Audience Award!
The 2026 laureates were selected from a total of 30 outstanding projects from 18 countries. The awards ceremony will be held on May 28, 2026 at the Municipal Theatre in Nicosia, Cyprus.
The Hungarian success does not end here: the Opera House is also a candidate for the Public Choice Award . Voting will be open until May 12 on the official Europa Nostra website.
